A Burry Port firm will feel the immediate benefit of Tata Steel’s pledge to invest a massive £800 million in Wales over the next five years.

The first keystone in that investment is the £185m to be spent on rebuilding the No 4 blast furnace at Tata Steel’s huge Port Talbot plant.

And the small specialist Amcanu firm in Burry Port will gain spin-off business from that development.

“We are delighted to say we are already involved in the No4 blast furnace project,” said Owain Davies, managing director at the specialist tailored sheet metal solutions firm.

“We are quite a small fish in this particular pond, but it just goes to show that the ripples from massive investment projects like the one planned by Tata Steel can reach a long way.

“As a South Wales business we are delighted to see Tata Steel making such a huge commitment to the future of their industry in Wales.

“It can only be good news for other businesses as they feel the ripple effect of such welcome investment.”

Mr Davies said the team at Amcanu were very excited to play their part in the rebuild of No4 blast furnace.

“In total, we will be supplying 13 pumping units, worth an estimated £200,000 to us as a business.

“Obviously, when you scale things down, the sums of money don’t seem so massive when you reach firms of our scale and size.

“But a project like this does represent great news for Amcanu, a firm which employs 26 people in Burry Port.

“We have come a long way from our early history as a general engineering contractor.

“The Amcanu business today is all about specialising in a particular niche in tailored sheet metal solutions.

“Sound-insulation is the name of the game when it comes to providing pumping equipment and our specialist solutions are put to work in quarries, mines, sewerage works and, of course, steelworks.

“Adaptability is the key to our business and we spend a lot of time on research and development. We are thinking about the solutions to problems even before we get firms coming to us with their queries. It’s our ‘in front of the market’ approach.

“Having a speciality means that we have a great market opportunity here in Burry Port and we have geared up for that with investment in people and technology to make sure that we can deliver specialist sheet metal solutions as and when they are required.

“The products for Port Talbot will be put to use as back-up pumps for the cooling system for the blast furnace. But we won’t be resting on our laurels here at Amcanu as we will be busy thinking about news and innovative products and engineering solutions for our clients.

“We relish a challenge and as a business with a great deal of heritage we care passionately about what we do, investing heavily in quality control, research and development.

Notes to editors:

Amcanu is a design and manufacturing business. We provide tailored sheet metal solutions, with the emphasis on quality, attention to detail and precision. Based in West Wales, we produce tailored sheet metal solutions which are used around the world.

Amcanu is the company name and it reflects our Welsh roots and our passion for our work. Amcanu is a Welsh word (you can pronounce it Ahm-KAHN-ee). The word means – ‘to design . . . to have a purpose’. Amcanu reflects our Welsh identity and our manufacturing values.

We specialise in acoustic insulated enclosures for use in an industrial environment. For example, we can provide cases for water pumps or other types of noisy equipment.

Amcanu’s association with Burry Port goes back more than 30 years. The business became a part of the economic fabric of the community in 1975 when it started as Spencer Davies Engineering. Spencer Davies is group chairman of Amcanu and the father of Amcanu managing director Owain Davies. Over the years, the business has evolved to its current operation as Amcanu, a company engaged in clever and innovative engineering production.

The ‘family’ work ethic still forms an important part of 40-year-old Owain’s stewardship of the company, with the business having many experienced long-term employees working alongside highly-skilled technology wizards who know how to get the best out of today’s cutting edge computer equipment.

We hold Investors in people status. We also hold the ISO 9001 benchmark. We have received a Certificate of Merit from Sony.

Tailored sheet metal solutions are the name of the game here at Amcanu. Good ‘tailors’ are always at a premium and we like to think of ourselves as the Savile Row of sheet metal solutions

One of Amcanu’s key clients is the global pump manufacturer Godwin Pumps.

Godwin is part of the Xylem group of companies, with a worldwide presence.

Godwin has its manufacturing base here in the UK, with its head office in North America.

It manufactures pumps for all kinds of industrial use.

“You name it and there’s a Godwin pump for it,” said Amcanu managing director Owain Davies.

“Construction, mining, disaster recovery, environmental work, heavy industry and manufacturing, marine, mining, quarrying, oil, gas and chemicals work, fire protection, water and waste management . . . you name it and there’s a Godwin pump for the job.”

The firm manufactures, rent and sells all products, including the fully automatic self-priming Godwin Dri-Prime pump and accessories.

Mr Davies said: “The Godwin name is top of the tree when it comes to pumps and we are delighted to be associated with the firm.

“Where we come in is in providing tailored sheet metal enclosures for their pumping products.

“These are crucial in areas where you need sound insulation in any areas where there may be possible noise pollution.

“What we do is a lot more than just sticking an enclosure around a pump.

“You have to make sure the pump is properly ventilated, that it can still function properly as a pumping unit, that it is portable, that maintenance can be carried out easily.

“Crucially important to the design of the whole thing is that it does the job of dampening down the noise of the engine and pump.

“There are a whole host of factors to be taken into account when manufacturing an enclosure for an industrial pump. Also the units are in very different shapes and sizes, so it really does call for tailor-made engineering solutions. It’s very much a bespoke job.”

They love a challenge at Amcanu.

Which is why they didn’t bat an eyelid when they received a request to help the West and East Wales Pigeon Federation.

“There is a great philosophy here at Amcanu,” said Owain Davies, managing director.

“It goes along the lines of ‘you throw it and we’ll try and catch it’.

“So, we are never taken aback by unusual requests. In fact, we relish them. The design team love a challenge and the manufacturing staff enjoy turning out tailor-made sheet metal products.”

The West and East Wales Pigeon Federation wanted a new transport solution.

Amcanu designed and manufactured the all-new shiny aluminium pigeon crates.

Mr Davies said: “The Pigeon Federation were delighted with the results and the crates are now being put to very good use.

“The design of them was very important as racing pigeons need to be transport sometimes very long distances both safely and comfortably.

“The pigeons need to arrive at their destination in the best possible condition so that they are ready to race home.”

At Amcanu, there is a seamless movement between design and assembly.

There is a high level of communication between staff involved in design and production.

The assembly department at Amcanu has a wealth of experience in putting together sheet-metal enclosures.

You name it, and they’ve handled it.

They’ve put together enclosures containing mechanical, hydraulics, pneumatics and electrical assemblies.

Experienced operators ensure that great care is taken in the assembly process.

Amcanu ensures products are delivered in the best condition possible.

After the smoke-free legislation came into force in Wales on April 2, 2007, Amcanu was quick to see an opportunity.

The legislation ended smoking in enclosed and substantially enclosed public places.

Pubs, clubs and restaurants had to find ways to keep their customers happy.

Amcanu developed a range of smoking shelters to allow smokers to indulge their habits outside of pubs, restaurants and workplaces.

“It was a classic case of seeing an opportunity and going for it,” said Owain Davies, managing director at Amcanu.

“We came up with some designs for smoke shelters and think we did our bit to keep everyone happy – smokers and non-smokers.

“In addition, we worked hard on the concerns about cigarette litter and came up with very neat and novel cigarette litter bins.

“These also doubled up as advertising boards, enabling pubs and clubs to put targeted messages and advertising in front of their customers.

“With something like the smoking legislation, it was a good opportunity for us to come up with innovative solutions which helped to keep everyone happy.”

Owain Davies, managing director at Amcanu, explained:

“Gatwick had a very specific problem with a pumping unit.

“They wanted to contain it to cut down on noise pollution, but they also wanted 360 degree access to the unit for maintenance and other working procedures.

“They presented us with the problem – and we presented them with the solution.

“We designed a tailored sheet metal solution which served all their needs.”
