We were delighted to support a local STEM event organised by Lee Waters, Llanelli Assembly Member (AM), in recognition of the pilot and adventurer Amelia Earhart. The event was for 100 school girls aged 8 and offered ‘flight’ themed activities to give them a fun experience of science and tech.

Ms Earhart landed her plane between Burry Port and Pwll 90 years ago after becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic.

Our local AM is passionate about recovering the economy in our area and is, like us, keen to grow the work force of the future – only 16% of jobs in STEM fields are taken by women.

The event was very well received, which isn’t a surprise because we know that young girls are interested in science and maths. Girls are not predisposed to dislike these subjects, at primary school level they do better than boys in STEM subjects and are equal to boys at secondary school, however this does not play out in the workplace.

We need to harness the enthusiasm that’s displayed by young girls and build momentum through the education system all the way to the workplace. Fantastic to have a local event designed to do this, helping girls see the STEM subjects they enjoy as a gateway to a great career.
